SOCIETY AS A SYSTEM

 

1.  Concept of System

A system is a set of interrelated units.

Units

·         Units may be People, buildings, animals, beliefs, Laws etc.

·         Each unit is related to and dependent upon other unit within the same system.

·         A change in one unit may bring change in another unit or in the whole system.

·         Each unit has function of their own which is different from other units.

Despite of having different functions, every unit collectively work towards achieving a common goal of the system. Hence the functioning of the system depends on the functioning of every unit. The system function towards attainments of Certain Goal.

Example of a system is Respiratory system. Units of respiratory system are lungs, Nose, Trachea, Diaphragm etc. these all perform different functions but the overall goal is to intake oxygen and deliver it to blood and remove carbon dioxide from blood.

2. Concept of Society

In abstract terms, as a network of relationships between people or between groups.

In concrete terms, as a collection of people or an organization of persons.

According to wright, “it is the system of relationship that exist among the individuals of a group”

According to Maclver, “it is the web of social relationship which is always changing”


Characteristics of society

A group of people: Who are more people are required to germinate a society.

Interaction: Interaction or relation among the members of group makes a group a society if there are no interaction among the people it cannot be called a society.

Size is variable:  size of a society may vary it may be as small as 10 members working in an office or as large as thousands of people living in a building complex or even larger common territory.

Common culture: members of society follow common culture which is different from culture of other society. Culture includes norm, belief, rules and laws etc.

Common goal: Members of society share common goal


3.  Society as a system

Society is also a system as it follows all the Criteria of being a system viz. It has different units, all units are interrelated, each unit perform different function and they all work towards attainment of a social goal. The units of a social system are individuals, groups and communities, educational system, Political system, Economical system etc. all these units work in a coordinated manner to achieve the social goals such as Achieving Total Literacy, upliftment of downtrodden etc.
